HOMEWORK THIS WEEKEND

Due Monday, Feb 18 / Tuesday, Feb 19:

1. In your sketchbook, make two ten step value scales (one using cross hatching, the other blended with half tone stripe down the middle as demonstrated in class- see book for example) for each of the following pencils: 4H, 2H, 2B, 4B. Next, on a separate page(s) make two six step value scales for both vine charcoal and compressed charcoal. Follow same directions as with pencil. Place a blank sheet of paper over the charcoal pages so it won't smudge the other side.

2. Apple (or other simple form) drawing: In your sketchbook, make a six step value scale in vine (willow) charcoal at the bottom edge of the page. You will draw the apple above the value scale on this page. First, actively stare at apple for five full minutes- time yourself. It's hard. Next, begin to draw the apple using only tone, no line. Use all six values on your value scale. It may help to blur your eyes to simplify the values. Draw the apple for twenty minutes- time yourself.

See you next week!

CLASS CANCELED

I'm sorry to say I have the stomach flu and will have to cancel today's class. Critiques will be postponed until Thursday. I hope to return as early as tomorrow. I look forward to seeing your fully developed still life drawings and sketchbook exercises then.

This week: read pages 91-105 (PERSPECTIVE) AND pages 29-35 (VALUE); add the keywords on p 105 and p 35 to your growing list of terms in your sketchbook.

Best regards,

Clarification re: Artist Presentation Assignment

Hi all,

A few of you have asked if it's okay to do your presentation on an artist who is NOT on the list. To clarify, you must choose an artist on the list. This assignment is designed to familiarize you with a contemporary artist or artist group whose work deals with conflict in some way, and whose work you are not already familiar with. I think you'll enjoy the assignment. Get back to me with any further questions.

Thanks!

Marina
